FIRST AVENUE PRESENTS TENNIS TENNIS: Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They planned to buy a small sailboat and spend the next year living aboard and traveling exclusively under sail. For years this dream was carefully nurtured while preparations were made. Learning to sail and selecting a boat is difficult to accomplish from a landlocked state. Their nautical self-education consisted of a steady diet of how-to books and videos. They were motivated by stories shared by sailors like Joshua Slocum, or Lin and Larry Pardey. On a sailboat minimalism transcends efficiency. There are no schedules, no agendas, or the many concerns that come with modern life. A sailor cares only for the direction of the wind and the condition of the water. Riley and Moore did not want their perception of the world to be shaped by spreadsheets, or facts gleaned in classrooms. They wanted a life of experience unmediated by people or things, a life of intimate participation with their environment. Cell phones, television, household appliances, the conveniences of modern life were traded for simplicity and contentment. A return to evenings spent indulging in the profound silence of the remotest regions, far from the yellowy glow of civilization. Voyaging along the North Atlantic coastline for seven months at an average speed of five miles an hour lends itself to reordering one’s priorities. The long way is the beautiful one. The hard way is the most rewarding. Two years after completing their 2500 nautical mile voyage, Riley and Moore’s experience has led them to seek out a new endeavor. Their music bears the mark of months spent alone with the sea and each other. It is tinged with the sweet affection of new lovers. It bears the uncluttered aesthetic of time spent in remote and uninhabited regions. Their music is a modest attempt to translate an old truth rediscovered. |

FILL IN THE BREAKS AND RADIO K PRESENT... ECID WEREWOLF HOLOGRAM ALBUM RELEASE PARTY! with special guests KRISTOFF KRANE AWOL ONE CARNAGE DAVID MARS LIVE ART BY CHUCK U $8 IN ADVANCE/$10 DAY OF SHOW/AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE OR ELECTRIC FETUS, FIFTH ELEMENT, ECLIPSE RECORDS IN ST. PAUL AND THE TRIPLE ROCK SOCIAL CLUB Ecid is a kamikaze visionary: an artist with an all or nothing approach to every aspect of his art and life. Ambitious almost to a fault with an “us against them” DIY mentality, Ecid has self-booked, self released, and self-made his own movement. Ecid doesn’t try to sell you on any one way of life, he only sells you on the idea that you can live however you want. All three of Ecid's most recent releases have charted on the College Music Journal's Hip Hop Top 40 chart. Collaborating with the likes of Eyedea, Awol One, and Kristoff Krane along the way, his smashing new album, Werewolf Hologram, is destined to make even bigger waves. Ecid pushes the limits of sampling, it’s not so much what he samples, it’s what he does with every note. Pitch shifting and chopping every sample to the point of no return, slapping together psych-rock vocal chops with 808 booms and hand claps, then adding more layers of drum breaks and echo heavy guitars. Inspired by the duality in humanity, Werewolf Hologram tackles heavy thought provoking topics that dig into your head. The hooks explode; layer upon layer of infectious melodies evoking color and nostalgia. Ecid brings you into a new world: his world. With a knack for slap stick, smarty pants one liners that will make you smile while shaking your head in disbelief, his voice is full of charm and just enough personal triumph and tragedy that makes it hard not to believe every word. Werewolf Hologram is an album fueled by the loss of a friend and mentor, an epic computer crash, and the realization that nothing, not even plastic, is meant to last. |

MUSTARD PLUG Formed in 1991, Mustard Plug established itself as a hard-working independent band. The Grand Rapids, MI-based group, with the help of its label, the California indie ska-punk outfit Hopeless Records, repeatedly toured the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. It made the rounds of two Warped Tours and participated in the Ska Against Racism tour. Mustard Plug began its career meagerly, releasing the cassette Skapocalypse Now! on its own Dashiki Clout label in 1992. (It would be re-released on CD by Dashiki Clout and Hopeless in 1998.) But the band's proper debut, 1993's Big Daddy Multitude, was backed by the seminal ska label Moon Records, which eventually went bankrupt. (The album was re-released by Hopeless after it signed Mustard Plug in the mid-'90s.) The CD pushed Mustard Plug into touring orbit, as they began playing a multitude of gigs. Just as ska-punk was moving into the mainstream, Mustard Plug sent Evil Doers Beware to stores in 1997. Selling more than 90,000 copies, Evil Doers was a collaboration between the band and punk legends Bill Stevenson (formerly of Black Flag) and Stephen Egerton, both of whom play in All and the Descendents. The same year, Mustard Plug quietly offered its skanking, rollicking take on the Verve Pipe's maudlin alt-rock hit "The Freshmen" for a charity CD. The song generated such a buzz that it was met with radio play on major stations throughout the Midwest. Stevenson and Egerton returned to the boards for the Simpsons-referencing Pray for Mojo, which hit stores in 1999. Yellow #5 followed three years later, and Mustard Plug issued the hits set Masterpieces: 1991-2002 in 2005. "A punk band releasing a best-of album?" the band asked on its website. "Hey NOFX did it, so it must be OK!" In 2007, still showing no signs of selling out to the majors, the group released its seventh album, In Black and White, with the assistance of Hopeless Records. by Christina Fuoco - All Music |

YUKON BLONDE LIBRARY VOICES $8 IN ADVANCE/$10 AT THE DOOR DAY OF SHOW FROM THEIR WIKIPEDIA PAGE: Yukon Blonde is a Canadian indie rock band originally from Kelowna, British Columbia. Formed in 2005 as a quintet called Alphababy, the band members changed the name in late 2008 at the suggestion of Jon-Rae Fletcher, with whom the band was touring. The band has been based in Vancouver since 2009. Now a trio with some guest touring members, Yukon Blonde is signed to Bumstead Records and Nevado Records. As Alphababy, the group released two EPs that received favourable critical reviews. Yukon Blonde's debut EP was Everything in Everyway. Their debut self-titled album, which was recorded live-to-tape, came out in 2010. For both, they worked with record producer Shawn Cole, who has previously worked with such bands as Bend Sinister and You Say Party! We Say Die!. The band has toured the US and Canada, and played at such festivals as South by Southwest. The band was named one of the "10 Canadian bands destined to break in 2010" by the CBC, and Chart called the band the best of the 2010 Canadian Music Week festival. |

HOUSSE DE RACKET FROM THE GUARDIAN: Two French boys who started out as session musicians for Air and Phoenix, they got their break when they hooked up with the famous (at least in "French touch" terms) Philippe Zdar, the Parisian producer and one half of Cassius. Housse De Racket released an album in 2010 called Forty Love, and we're so impressed we might just dig it out. One of the tracks, Oh Yeah, is on YouTube, and it's great, a happy-sad pop-funk list-song celebrating their R&B heroes (and there's no arguing with their choices: Zapp & Roger, Earth Wind & Fire, the Isleys, Sly, Marvin, Michael, Prince, Clinton and Chic all get namechecks). And now here they are, with a second LP, Alesia, all brilliant, buoyant melodies like only the French know how to make them, lighter than air, or for that matter Air. Hanging round studios with the people behind Air, Cassius and Phoenix has paid off: Alesia sounds like the sum of those influences, with some of the ambient textures of the first, disco lustre of the second, and pop nous of the third.
